The Wisconsin National Guard is made
up of nearly 10,000 men and women who serve in more than 100 guard units located
in 67 communities across the state.
They are organized, trained, equipped and available
for military assignments throughout the world as well as for state emergencies.
The Wisconsin National Guard headquarters is located
in Madison. Army Guard units include the 32nd “Red Arrow” Brigade Combat Team
headquartered at Camp Douglas; 64th Troop Command, Madison; 157th Combat Support
Brigade, Milwaukee; and the 426th Leadership Regiment, Fort McCoy. Air Guard
units include the 115th Fighter Wing, Madison; 128th Air Control Squadron and
Combat Readiness Training Center, Volk Field; and the 128th Air Refueling Wing,
Milwaukee. Subordinate units are located throughout Wisconsin.
Since Sept 11, 2001, more than 80 percent of
Wisconsin’s Guard members have mobilized — mostly overseas to fight the Global
War on Terror. They have also supported humanitarian missions in Nicaragua,
deployed to the U.S. Gulf Coast in response to Hurricane Katrina, provided
duration staff and annual training rotations to Operation Jump Start on the
Southwest U.S. border, and established a National Guard Reaction Force ready to
respond in the event of a national disaster, act of terrorism or other incident
affecting lives, safety or property.
The Wisconsin National Guard currently has nearly 360
soldiers and airmen on active duty. In addition to their role as
citizen-soldiers, these men and women also are employees, employers, volunteers
and leaders in their communities.
