For soldiers returning home, more challenges await
January 11, 2010
By Steven Verburg
madison.com

Veterans coming back from long overseas tours must cope with changes they've undergone in dangerous, foreign environments, and in the way life at home has changed as well.

"In addition to the excitement and the happiness, there will be uncertainty and anxiety about being reunited after so long," said Lt. Col. Tammy Gross, chief of the state Guard's support team for soldiers, veterans and their families.

"We tell them this is normal. If they get to where they can't handle it, we have a lot of resources."

December 30, 2009

Some U.S. forces, including Wisconsin National Guard members in Iraq, got the chance to talk with two NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station who also are far away from their families and friends.

Station Commander Jeff Williams, a retired U.S. Army colonel, and Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer, an Army colonel, talked with U.S. forces while orbiting 220 miles above Earth. Service members talked with the astronauts about life on the station, their military careers and what it is like to live in space for up to six months.

Editorial: Bill treats service members fairly
By The Oshkosh Northwestern
October 15, 2009

It is refreshing to see the House of Representatives act on legislation that solves a problem without the partisan rancor that has been pervasive in Washington.

The House gave a glimpse of its roots last week when it unanimously passed a bill co-sponsored by Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, and Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse that extends the $8,000 tax credit for first time home buyers to service members overseas.

Troops In Iraq To Tailgate for Packers Game Via Satellite
By Erik Bilstad of TMJ4, Milwaukee
October 16, 2009

The Packers host the Lions at Lambeau Field this Sunday.

As thousands of fans tailgate outside the stadium this morning, members of the Wisconsin National Guard will be firing up the grills in Iraq.

It's a tradition for many Packers fans before kickoff - crack open a few colds ones and throw a couple of brats on the grill.

Some come from hundreds of miles away to enjoy the festivities.

This weekend, they'll come from 7,000 miles away...sort of.

It's called Tailgating for Troops.

Commander holds town hall e-meeting for Guard families
By Meg Jones of the Journal Sentinel
September 16, 2009

It's one minute before 7 p.m. and time for the adjutant general to meet with families of the 3,600 Wisconsin National Guard members deployed overseas.

Brig. Gen. Donald Dunbar would prefer to meet everyone in person, but with soldiers and airmen from throughout the state now stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan, the logistics of visiting all their families in all their communities makes that impossible.

Like everyone else, the military is embracing social media such as Facebook and Twitter as a way to stay in touch. On Tuesday night, Dunbar, the state's top military commander, conducted an electronic town hall meeting, the second since 3,200 members of the 32nd Brigade Combat Team deployed to Iraq this year.

More than 3,000 Wisconsin National Guard Soldiers return from Iraq in January
January 6, 2010

The 3,200 Soldiers from the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and six other Wisconsin Army National Guard units will return to Wisconsin beginning Tuesday. Leading the way will be approximately 115 Soldiers, mostly from the Fort Atkinson-based Troop A, 105th Calvary, followed by the remaining 3,000 Soldiers throughout the month.

All are scheduled to return to Volk Field where they will be met by senior National Guard officials, a military band and family members - homecomings are not open to the general public. Following an initial reunion with their families and a brief official "welcome home," the Soldiers will travel to nearby Fort McCoy to begin about five days of demobilization processing before being released from active duty.

Farewell, Iraq
January 2, 2010

BAGHDAD - It's been a long deployment for 3,200-plus soldiers of the Wisconsin National Guard's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, but it is finally coming to an end. Sometime in early January, the first of many chartered airliners will touch down at a Wisconsin airfield and Red Arrow soldiers will begin planting their boots back on the ground in their home state after completing their service in Iraq.

As the 32nd Brigade's public affairs officer in Iraq, I've had an opportunity to send a few dozen releases from Baghdad over the past eight months to let Wisconsin know what our troops are doing here. These have all been straightforward, fact-based descriptions of our units' missions and our soldiers' accomplishments. In this final dispatch, I will be a bit more personal, as some of the things I think Wisconsin should know are less tangible. So opinions and impressions I have formed from my observations here are sprinkled in.

32nd Brigade wrapping things up in Iraq
December 24, 2009

The Wisconsin Army National Guard's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team is upbeat about spending the holidays on deployment in Iraq, in part because everyone knows what the new year will bring.

"Right now we're in the midst of transferring our missions all over Iraq to our replacement unit from the 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team from the Texas National Guard," explained Lt. Col. Tim Donovan, public affairs officer for the 32nd Brigade. "So as we complete that process, which is called 'relief in place,' we'll have a formal transfer of authority ceremony. At that point the mission is theirs and we're cleared to go home."

Soldiers thank students for care packages with visit
Leader-Telegram
Eau Claire,WI,USA
By Christena T. O'Brien, Leader-Telegram
December 11, 2009

A classroom was filled with anticipation Thursday at Memorial High School as students sat around unwrapped gifts. Rather than exchanging presents themselves as they normally would do, the students with severe cognitive disabilities decided it was better to give than receive this year - at the suggestion of Melissa Bushendorf, a special education teacher - and they couldn't wait to show off the contents of the packed boxes: their presents to U.S. troops

To make the efforts of the 23 students more meaningful, Bushendorf invited a friend - Eric Kitelinger of Eau Claire - to speak to the class Thursday. Kitelinger, a chief warrant officer in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, and Clint Simenson, a staff sergeant, served in Iraq.

"They are definitely going to love you guys," Kitelinger told the students....

Soldiers Enjoy Camp Bucca Golf Course
December 10, 2009

From the air, the basic outline of Camp Bucca appears as most military forward operating bases in Iraq, except for nine fluttering white flags affixed to poles jutting from the ground.

The flags aren't tokens of surrender, but they often elicit cries of frustration from soldiers who have thrown their best at this opponent, only to be repelled.

Army Master Sgt. Brian Franzen, a platoon sergeant in "D" Company of the Wisconsin National Guard's 132nd Brigade Support Battalion, said it's just par for the course.

Wisconsin National Guard ground, air commanders meet in Iraq
November 8, 2009

IRAQ - While more than 3,200 Soldiers of the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team have their boots on the ground in Iraq, some of their fellow Guardsmen from the state's Air National Guard have their jets in the sky overhead. It isn't often that aerial support for Army Guard ground troops comes from an Air Guard unit from the same state, but for the past two months about 300 members of Wisconsin's Madison-based 115th Fighter Wing are in Iraq with about a dozen F-16 fighters.

The two top commanders - Army Guard Col. Steven Bensend and Air Guard Lt. Col. Erik Peterson - met at an air base in Iraq as the fighter unit was nearing completion of its mission here.

Dispatches from Wisconsin men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan
September 8, 2009

At FOB Bucca, there are several permanent infrastructures originally built to sustain Army forces and missions. These include a brick factory capable of producing up to 1 million bricks per month, an ice plant capable of producing up to 45 tons of ice per day, and a Waste Water Treatment Plant with the ability to sustain a population of over 50,000 people.

In addition -- and most importantly -- we are also currently overseeing the completion of a new water treatment facility capable of producing 2 million gallons of water a day. FOB Bucca is located above the largest aquifer in the region. The new water treatment facility is able to drill down to the water, retrieve it, and then treat it so that it is drinkable. While deployed here, our goals are not only to see through the completion of the construction of this water treatment plant but also to complete several projects that will provide local cities/villages direct access to our water, waste plant, brick, and ice factory assets in the near future. We also intend to provide the vocational training required to sustain these assets after our departure.

National Guard major seeks to improve Iraqi schools
September 8, 2009

Dirt polished to a dull sheen by the passing hands of generations of schoolchildren covers the bottom 3 feet of hallway walls in the Umm Casr, Iraq, elementary school. Above the dirt line, grammar and math exercises are scrawled on the sand-colored walls. The children have no paper. Virtually every window in the school is broken, the incoming sunlight illuminating a jumble of broken school desks piled in the middle of the classroom.

For Wisconsin Army National Guard Maj. John T. Oakley of Appleton, the image solidifies his resolve to rebuild the school into a positive learning experience for children.
