Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs RSS News Feeds
National Guard news and information is available through RSS feeds, which use a technology
called XML to deliver headlines and summaries to your desktop or Web browser. RSS feeds,
when used in conjunction with an RSS Reader, will automatically update with the latest content
at set intervals so that you do not have to visit this page to check for the latest news.
RSS FAQs
What is RSS?
RSS or Rich Site Syndication (also 'Really Simple Syndication') feeds are free content feeds from web
sites that contain headlines, summaries and links to the full page on the web site. Using an RSS
reader, you can view data feeds from various news sources.
How do I use RSS?
Special news readers, called 'news aggregators' are required for you to be able to use RSS feeds.
You can locate RSS readers via web search engines such as Google or Yahoo. Some Web browsers, such
as Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (Win), Firefox (Mac/Win), and Safari (Mac) also allow you to view
RSS feeds directly in your browser.
Why use RSS?
RSS is an easy way to gather a wide variety of content in one place on your computer. Rather than
having to visit many web sites to find out if there is new content, the RSS aggregator shows it all
to you in one screen. Many RSS readers also 'alert' you when new content from your favorite web site
is delivered. You can also use the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs news feeds directly on
your website. (See "Can I use Department of Military Affairs News Feeds on my Web site?" below.)
We also offer an email list that users can subscribe to and receive new content via email. But subscribing
to the email list can result in a clogged inbox in your email application. And you have to separate the
subscribed email from other email. Subscribing to our RSS feeds can eliminate that email entirely. However,
subscribing to the RSS feeds (you subscribe using the tools in your chosen RSS reader)does not unsubscribe
you from the email lists, you must manually unsubscribe, if desired. You can maintain subscriptions to
both services simultaneously.
How do I subscribe to RSS feeds from the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs?
In order to subscribe to an RSS feed or newsfeed you will need two things, an RSS reader
(also known as a news aggregator) and url (web address) of the RSS feed that you wish to subscribe.
- Download a News Aggregator / RSS Reader.
(Click Here To search for an RSS Reader)
- Locate the web address (url) of the RSS feed (XML file) that you wish to subscribe.
A news aggregator or RSS reader is a software application that collects and displays news headlines
and summaries from sources that you have designated. An RSS feed is an XML document that contains
the news headlines and summaries.
- Install the feed reader or news aggregator on the computer.
- Insert the url of the news feed (there is usually an "add feed" button).
- Many of the news readers will allow you to set the interval that the software
will look for a feed update others simply update daily.
- The information in the feed will be updated when the feed contains new content.
