Brigadier General Mark E. Anderson

Brig. Gen. Mark E. Anderson is Wisconsin's assistant adjutant general for Army. As such, he commands the 7,800 Soldiers of the Wisconsin Army National Guard and is responsible to the adjutant general for all aspects of its mission performance and readiness in response to any federal or domestic requirement. The Wisconsin Army National Guard has four major subordinate commands: the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the 157th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, the 64th Troop Command and the 426th Regiment. Gen. Anderson earned his bachelor's degree in Water Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1986. He is a 1985 graduate of the Wisconsin Military Academy and has completed the Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Army Command and General Staff College, Army War College, and the Army Senior Leader Development Course. He earned a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in 2002. Gen. Anderson has attended National Security Strategy Fellowships at Harvard University-John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2008; the George C. Marshall Senior Executive Seminar in 2010 and Syracuse University's Maxwell School in 2012.

Gen. Anderson enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1983. After transferring to the Wisconsin Army National Guard and attending the Wisconsin Military Academy, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1985. He served in 1st Battalion, 120th Field Artillery, as a fire support officer, firing battery commander, intelligence officer, fire direction officer, operations officer, and battalion commander. He has also served as the 32nd Brigade fire support officer; as assistant operations and training officer, State Area Command; as executive officer of the 57th Field Artillery Brigade; and as deputy commander of the 32nd Separate Infantry Brigade. From 2005 through 2006 he served with the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq as a senior military transition team advisor to the Iraqi army at An Numaniyah Military Training Base and Habbaniyah Military Base, responsible for equipping, training and deploying over 20,000 Iraqi soldiers. Upon his return, he commanded the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team from December 2006 until assuming his present position March 1, 2008. Gen. Anderson also served as the Deputy Commanding General for Army National Guard, Field Artillery Center, Fort Sill, Okla., where he was the advisor and personal representative of the Commanding General of United States Army Fires Center of Excellence for all Army National Guard Field Artillery matters pertaining to doctrine, training, leader development, force structure, resource management and operational execution.

Gen. Anderson's military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with one silver and one bronze oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with bronze service star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award with oak leaf cluster and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Hourglass and "M" devices, as well as other federal and state awards. Gen. Anderson has also been awarded the Combat Action Badge and is a recipient of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara (Artillery) and Military Order of Saint Maurice-Centurion (Infantry).
