Should a government shutdown furlough occur, those who are furloughed may experience financial hardship due to delayed paychecks that will be paid retroactively. If you are affected and experience financial challenges, consider the following tips and resources outlined on this web page.

  • Call your mortgage and utility companies to inform them of the situation. They may grant leeway with payments.
    • Remember that failure to pay without contacting the company first could result in a negative impact to your credit score.
    • Some credit card issuers waive late fees for those impacted by a shutdown.
  • If your credit card company isn’t offering relief and you’re less than 30 days late, ask the issuer to please remove the late fee from your statement.
    • Once you’re more than 30 days late, the issuer can report your tardiness to the credit bureaus.
  • Call your credit card company and ask to speak with the hardship department. Explain your situation and ask if you can get help. You may be able to modify payments for a limited time.
