Lieutenant Colonel Tomas J. Thomas began his military career on June 6, 1966, when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon his graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Air Force ROTC. He was immediately assigned to Reese Air Force Base, TX. In 1968 he reported to his first assignment as a KC-135 pilot at Kinchloe Air Force Base, Mich.
Over the course of the active-duty portion of his military career, he served on a series of 60-day rotations to Utaphoa Air Base, Thailand. On average, his unit would offload one million pounds of fuel in support of combat missions in Vietnam.
In 1971, he joined the 128th Air Refueling Wing, Milwaukee, Wis. as a KC-97 pilot. In 1978 he transferred to the 115th Fighter Wing, Madison, Wis. and became a qualified A-37 Dragonfly pilot, and later he became an A-19 Thunderbolt II pilot until his retirement.
Lt Col Thomas was inducted into the Wisconsin Air National Guard Hall of Fame January 2018.
