First Lieutenant Jerome A. Volk enlisted into the Air Force and served with the 36th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 8th Fighter Bomber Group.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and flew the P-51 Mustang aircraft. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard’s 126th Fighter Squadron in January 1949.
On November 7, 1951, he piloted an F-80C Shooting Star on a combat mission against enemy positions in North Korea. During the mission, his aircraft crashed.
1st Lt Volk was reportedly killed in the incident, but his remains were not recovered, and he is still unaccounted for. He was the first Wisconsin Air National Guard pilot killed in the Korean War.
The Wisconsin National Guard rededicated the part of Camp Williams, used by the Wisconsin Air National Guard, as Volk Field Air National Guard. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Air National Guard Hall of Fame January 2015.
