General Bart Van Roo

Brig. Gen. Bart T. Van Roo is the Deputy Adjutant General – Air Wisconsin Air National Guard. He serves as the chief advisor to The Adjutant General on all matters pertaining to Air National Guard Programs, policies, operations, management and command and control of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. He also provides staff assistance guidance and direction concerning Air National Guard personnel, administration, and training matters. General Van Roo is responsible for more than 2,300 Wisconsin National Guard personnel serving in two flying wings and a Combat Readiness Training Center.

General Van Roo began his military career in 1992 with the 115th Fighter Wing, enlisting as an aeromedical specialist and serving as a noncommissioned officer until 1998. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, he received his commission through the Academy of Military Science in April 1999. He completed specialized undergraduate pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, in 2000, followed by the F-16 Training Course at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. Returning to the 115th Fighter Wing, General Van Roo held a series of key roles within the Operations Group. He served multiple combat tours as an F-16 instructor pilot, contributed many years to Operation Noble Eagle, and advanced to Director of Operations for the 176th Fighter Squadron. He later served as the Wing Inspector General, guiding the organization through its transition to the modern inspection system. In 2017, he was appointed Commander of the 176th Fighter Squadron. That same year, he deployed to the Korean Peninsula as Commander of the 176th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, supporting the 8th Fighter Wing during a period of heightened regional tension. He subsequently joined Joint Force Headquarters as the State Director of Operations for the Wisconsin Air National Guard while simultaneously directing the Northern Lightning Exercise at Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center. General Van Roo later assumed command of the 115th Fighter Wing, leading the organization through the F-35A conversion, the Air Control Alert transition, and the divestment of the F-16C and RC-26 missions. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Director of Strategic Plans and Operations for the State of Wisconsin, overseeing statewide readiness, planning, and operational integration.
