APPOINTMENT FACTORS

  1. Initial tour will be a 3 year OTOT. Airman will incur a 36-month obligation to the 54th CST upon completion of the 8-week Civil Support Skills Course.
  2. Non AGR Person receiving federal military retirement or retainer pay are not eligible.
  3. Must meet the physical requirements of DAFMAN 36-2905, in addition to OSHA physical requirements and color vision.
  4. Members who are not suitable for Career AGR may be considered for an Occasional Tour.
  5. Higher grades are eligible to apply but must take a voluntary reduction to the grade (E7) if selected.
  6. Must meet all AGR requirements of ANGI 36-101 and AFSC requirements of AFECD/AFOCD.
  7. IAW ANGI 36-101, paragraph 5.10, applicants should be able to complete 20 years of active federal service prior to Mandatory Separation Date (MSD). Individuals selected for AGR tours that cannot attain 20 years of active federal Service prior to reaching mandatory separation must complete a Statement of Understanding contained in Attachment 3 of ANGI36-101 and obtain TAG waiver approval prior to starting AGR tour.
  8. IAW ANGI 36-101, paragraph 6.6.1., members should remain in the position to which assigned for a minimum of 24 months. TAG may waive this requirement when in the best interest of the unit, State, or Air National Guard.
  9. Must reside within a 60-minute commute of the Madison duty location or PCS within 3 months of the date of hire.
  10. IAW ANGI 36-101, paragraph 5.7, an individual must not have been previously separated for cause from active duty or previous Reserve Component AGR tour.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Conducts Warfighter Communications and associated support activities to secure and operate the DoDIN and other allied cyberspace systems. This includes communications and cybersecurity practices to preserve the availability of cyber systems and protect to data, networks, net-centric capabilities, and other designated systems as well as passive defense measures intended to maintain and operate the DoDIN such as configuration control, patching and firewall configuration. Plans and organizes cyber support activities. Plans and supervises system installation and evaluates facilities layout and performance standards. Designs and develops organizational structures and determines equipment, training, and supplies required for systems implementation and support. Interacts with mission partners to ensure cyber capabilities meet mission requirements. Establishes tactics, techniques, and procedures. Evaluates operational readiness of communications equipment, network devices, sensors, intrusion detection, and related support equipment. Directs activities responsible for system analysis and design, programming, operations and maintenance, security, systems management, technical support, plans, implementation, and resource management. Implements and interprets policies, directives, and procedures. Establishes training requirements and programs to meet foundational and residential (e.g. local) knowledge and certification requirements and to enhance professional awareness of emerging technologies. Directs maintenance activities. Inspects and evaluates maintenance activities for compliance with directives. Evaluates, rates, and prepares reports. Recommends and implements corrective action for improved methods and procedures. Evaluates effectiveness of equipment usage, systems performance, customer service, supplies, system scheduling, processing, and maintenance. Plans, programs, and develops budget inputs to ensure resource availability for operational and training requirements.

The Cyber Systems Operator for the 54th WMD CST serves as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for planning, executing, and maintaining the unit’s critical IT, network, satellite, and radio communication systems during both garrison operations and tactical deployments. Operating under the direction of the Communications Team Chief, this position ensures continuous reach-back capabilities and uninterrupted connectivity for the unit and the Incident Commander by managing CST computer networks, troubleshooting complex hardware and software issues, and serving as the frequency manager. The operator is responsible for maintaining critical tactical platforms—including the Unified Command Suite (UCS), Advanced Echelon Vehicle (ADVON), Tactical Operations Center (TOC), and Dismounted Strike Kit (DSK)—to meet SEAT and TPE standards, while also managing COMSEC equipment and cryptographic keys. Additionally, the operator develops communications SOPs, directs unit signal training, and must maintain CompTIA Network+ and Security+, Microsoft Endpoint Management, and Cisco CCNA certifications while successfully fulfilling appointed roles as the Personnel Security Manager, Classified Materials Courier, COMSEC Account Manager, IMO, and Information Assurance Security Officer (IASO).

This specialty requires knowledge of techniques and procedures of systems analysis and design; project management, IT systems processing; system operation and maintenance; system and equipment capability, capacity, and logic; personnel and equipment performance measurement; awards programs and manpower and organization; security, administrative contract, training, resource, records, publications, deployment, logistics, and base/unit functional management.

Other. For award and retention of this AFSC: 3.5.1. Specialty may require routine access to classified information, systems, missions, and environments to include but not limited to Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF), Airborne platforms, Agile Combat Employment, Nuclear Command Control & Communications (NC3), and a multitude of emerging mission requirements in a highly contested domain IAW DoDM 5200.01-DAFMAN 16-1405. Must be eligible for Top Secret (Tier 5) and maintain security clearance based on current position requirements. Must maintain local network access IAW AFI 17-130, Cybersecurity Program Management and DAFMAN 17-1301, Computer Security. Must obtain or meet DoD Cyber Workforce qualifications based on approved cyberspace requirements applicable for cyberspace tasks required for any position held IAW DoDM 8140.03, Cyberspace Workforce Qualification and Management Program, and DAFMAN 17-1305, Cyberspace Workforce Management Program.

If any PULHES are a “3”, a statement indicating that individual is Worldwide Deployable needs to be submitted. Not mandatory for application but will be mandatory to start AGR tour if selected for advertisement.
  • SF 181 – (Race and Ethnicity Identification). Form is optional. Please see further instructions on the form.
  • All Other Service Component applicants must have their ASVAB raw scores converted to Air Force ASVAB scores and include them in a letter from either a Recruiter or MEPS Counselor.
